In order to free Lliira, an item of extraordinary power must be obtained. The Book of Exalted Deeds is such an item, and it resides in the vault of the Gran Sultan of all Efreet in the City of Brass on the Plane of Fire. No one has entered the vault unlawfully and survived. Getting into the vault will be difficult, but before they can do that they must find a way to get to the city. There is one sure-fire way to get there. In the city of Setma, a Sultan Efreet controls a cubic gate and is charged with maintaining it for the Grand Sultan so that Setma can act as a waypoint for traders, devil’s and elementals. Easy enough, but even getting to the city itself is difficult considering it is currently under siege from undead of Orcus.
Still, what must be done must be done, and the players head to Setma to find a way inside. When they do, they learn somehow that the city is very near falling. The undead outside need no sleep nor food nor water, but the people of Setma do. The cubic gate is missing, as is the Sultan. Questioning people or searching the city leads them to the Upper Gardens, where the Sultan is preparing to flee the city and leave his people. The bulk of his wealth – along with the cubic gate, is being hidden in a secret place behind a shrine in the Upper Gardens area of the city. The Sultan’s palace has been abandoned, as the Sultan has stolen he gate and is using it to transfer himself and all his wealth to another plane.
